Pick one corner, then the opposite one, and the rectangle between them is drawn. Pick a square inside a rectangle to take it back. Every square belongs to exactly one rectangle when you are done.

A rectangle holding a 6 must cover six squares — as one across and six down, two by three, three by two, or six across. The number never tells you the shape, only how much of the grid it takes.
A rectangle with no number in it is wrong, and so is one with two. Both turn red until you redraw them, which is usually the quickest way to find where a cut went astray.
