How Chess works

Chess

A fresh opening every day, the same one for everyone. Play it out and try to win.

All rules
Rule 01Everyone starts from the same position.

Today's board picks up a few moves into a real opening, and every player in the world gets that same position. The name of the opening is shown above the board.

Rule 02Tap a piece, then tap where it goes.

Legal destinations appear as dots. Tapping anywhere else changes your selection, so nothing is committed until you choose a marked square.

Rule 03Ordinary chess rules, all of them.

Castling, en passant, promotion, stalemate, the fifty-move rule and threefold repetition all apply. A pawn reaching the far rank asks what it should become.

Rule 04Play again as often as you like.

A loss or a draw does not close the day. Press Clear to take the same position again — the day counts as solved once you win it.
